MORE ABOUT UCI HEALTH’S SAFETY INITIATIVES

The following are UCI Health’s existing safety initiatives. These four programs form the pillars of UCI Health’s safety program. They exist in conjunction with the Empowered to Make a Difference campaign.

Safety Initiative: TeamSTEPPS®

Role: Mutual support

This multi-year, organization-wide project aims to boost team performance and optimize patient safety using validated tools demonstrated to improve communication, increase situation monitoring, and enhance mutual support and leadership.

UCI Health completed a pilot in June 2018 in SICU. Roll-out to critical care units and other ancillary departments will begin in fiscal year 2019, and we anticipate a three-year project. Culture of Safety survey scores will be utilized to monitor effectiveness; UCI Health anticipates re-administering the survey in spring 2019.

Safety Initiative: Zero by 2020

Role: Action steps

UCI Health is partnering with the non-profit Patient Safety Movement Foundation (PSMF) to achieve ZERO preventable deaths by 2020 (0X2020). UCI Health has committed to action on specific patient safety solutions for over 30 patient safety challenges; these commitments are publicly available on the PSMF website.

All commitments have been posted to the PSMF website for 2018 and work is ongoing in each area. Calculation of lives saved here at UCI Health will be submitted to the PSMF early 2019 for the 2018 calendar year.

Safety Initiative: Just Culture

Role: Setting expectations

Just Culture is a culture in which front-line operators and others are not punished for actions, omissions or decisions taken by them which are commensurate with their experience and training, but where gross negligence, willful violations, and destructive acts are not tolerated.

Safety Initiative: S&Q Crosswalk

Role: Feedback and measurement

The UCI Health Quality Metrics Crosswalk provides feedback to performance improvement owners on nationally recognized safety & quality metrics. Examples of metrics include mortality, pressure ulcers, falls, infections, readmissions, patient satisfaction scores and many more. Lead by our CMO, improvement owners meet monthly to report on improvement actions underway and to monitor their progress. The Crosswalk initiative began in early 2017 and meets monthly.
